On Beginning

I feel like I’ve been beginning things for close to a decade now. I’ve always loved starting something new but thankfully I’m learning the joy of settling into things too.

In 2012 I choose a new direction, a new beginning. I stepped away from a career path I’d been on for 20 years to find a more creative life; big step, but best step ever.

There have been many other milestones along this path. A monumental one occurred in 2014 when my husband and I purchased an old farmstead on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. My early days at the farm were filled with reflection, silence, hard physical work, and much creativity. I explored textiles and stitch, and fell in love with hand papermaking.

Now permanently settled in Cape Breton, I feel like I’ve come home. To me, it’s a place where all things are possible. Here I’ve fully embraced my life as a full-time artist and am launching Flying Finch Studio. The space includes a lower level papermaking studio and an upper level textile studio - a playground for the creative soul.

I hope you’ll begin with me and follow the journey ahead and maybe even join in the fun.

Stay creative.
